Where is the Best Place to Plant Dahlias? image
If you are thinking of planting dahlias, you probably already have an idea about where to plant them. They are a beautiful and easy to grow shrub that does very well in just about any location. You should however consider some factors before you start your garden. Planting dahlias is not a job for a novice gardener. You need to consider the climate, type of soil, amount of sun or shade the area receives, and of course whether you want a period or perennial garden.

The first consideration when planting dahlias is the area in which you will grow dahlias. Consider the surrounding area as well as how cold or warm it normally gets during the year. Try to find a location that receives little or no sun, either during the day or at night. Some areas in the United States do receive little sun and go through many frosts during the winter, while other areas are much more accustomed to warm weather and full sunlight throughout the year. For areas in the Midwest that are often transitional climates, such as along the eastern seaboard states, you will have good growing conditions regardless of the season.

When considering where to grow dahlias, another thing you must consider is the type of soil in which the area is sited. Most areas prefer clay, which is somewhat less porous than the sand of most regions. Clay hardens due to its porous nature, which limits the amount of water that can be absorbed by the soil. For areas that prefer a loamy soil, such as in coastal areas or those that are located near bodies of water, sand may be preferred. Limestone is another good choice.

One of the most beneficial characteristics of the dahlia tubers is that they can grow up to three feet tall, making them an ideal crop for indoor garden enthusiasts. Because they are not susceptible to very high temperatures or prolonged periods of light, you will not have to worry about them freezing during the winter. This is important if you live in an area where you have a tendency to see a lot of rainfall, but where the sun does not shine for long periods of time. Other benefits of the period living plants include the fact that they do not require any fertilizer; they will not need to be sprayed with insecticides or fungicides; and they will not compete with weeds in your garden.

In order to ensure that the dahlia plant produces the maximum number of buds, it is important that you begin to plant them in the spring, approximately two weeks before the beginning of May. The reason for this is that the growth period for these tubers extends throughout the summer. You should be able to pinch off some of the cuttings as they start to bloom, which will help to direct the roots. As long as you do not interfere with the growth process, the roots will take care of themselves and the flowers will flower for the next several months.

The final factor to consider when trying to answer the question, "Where is the best place to plant dahlias?" is the actual location that you will plant them in. Most people prefer to plant them in pots on a raised bed. This allows them to receive full exposure to the sun and water. If you live in an area where there are no large trees or shrubs in your yard, you may want to think about growing dahlias in pots instead. Regardless of the method you choose for planting your dahlias, they will be well cared for and the beauty of the flowers will last for years.
